Neurological residuals in this type are permanent with each flare up.  The patient should be monitored

Discussion:  NMO is a water channelopathy condition which can lead to serious disability if not treated in a timely manner.  The relapsing form results in progressive neurological deficits with each flare up.  The condition has historically been misdiagnosed given its similarity to multiple sclerosis, which does not have optic nerve findings.
